How to read a Panchang without feeling overwhelmed

Understand the five familiar calendar terms and why your location matters when looking up daily timings.

A Panchang is a traditional calendar or almanac. Its name refers to five elements used to describe the day: tithi, vara, Nakshatra, yoga and karana. You do not have to memorise every term to begin using one. Start by identifying what each entry is describing.

The five terms at a glance

  • Tithi: a lunar day, based on the angular separation of the Moon and Sun.
  • Vara: the weekday.
  • Nakshatra: the lunar mansion associated with the Moon’s position.
  • Yoga: a calendar element derived from the combined longitudes of the Sun and Moon.
  • Karana: a division corresponding to half a tithi.

These five elements are described in this history-of-mathematics workshop resource hosted by IIT Gandhinagar.

Check the location before the time

Before comparing timings, confirm the city, date and time zone. Sunrise-based calendar conventions and local time can affect how a daily entry is presented. A screenshot made for another city may not be appropriate for your location.

Also read how the service displays an ending time. A label may tell you when a tithi changes rather than describe something that continues until midnight. Check the provider’s notation instead of assuming it follows an ordinary diary.

Use one reference consistently

Different calendars can follow different conventions. If two sources disagree, compare their location, time zone and calculation notes before drawing a conclusion. For a family observance, you may also want to understand the tradition your household follows.

Keep the practical task in view

A Panchang can be part of cultural or religious planning. It does not remove ordinary considerations such as travel, availability and the needs of the people involved. Keep those practical details alongside the calendar.

Our Panchang guide explains the terminology. Babaji Astro does not currently provide calculated local auspicious timings.
